ANDOVER TRAILERS KEEPS THINGS ROLLING WITH TWO NEW PLANT BODIES FOR CRH PLANT

CRH Plant has added two new Andover Trailers plant bodies to its commercial vehicle fleet, continuing a long-standing relationship between the two companies that has included more than 25 bespoke builds.

CRH has been supplying specialist plant equipment to the construction and civil engineering sectors for more than 50 years. The new plant bodies, both mounted on 32-tonne Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3240L 8×2 rear-steer rigid chassis, will operate out of CRH’s busy Plymouth and Sheffield depots, delivering a wide range of heavy plant and specialist equipment across the South West and North East of the country.

Neville Thomas, CRH Plant’s Managing Director, explains why the company keeps returning to Andover: “The team are always extremely accommodating – we tell them what we need, they tell us how it can be done. In all the years we have been working together they have never let us down; this is what our relationship is built on, so why would we go to anyone else?”

As with each of CRH’s previous Andover Trailers builds, the new plant bodies are bespoke designs, made to incorporate the company’s exacting specifications, particularly on safety – both feature Andover’s removable working at height barriers, which have become a requirement on many of the sites CRH visits. When not in use, the system can be easily stowed away.

The plant bodies also feature Andover’s pioneering fold forward ramps – which Thomas insists are fitted to all CRH trailers and rigid trucks due to the impressive fuel savings they provide. The ramps have also been designed with a shallow loading angle to accommodate the 13-tonne self-propelled rollers that form the core of CRH’s business.

In addition, each build features a drawbar coupling, six pairs of lashing points, and a remote-controlled Ramsey H800 hydraulic winch. The winch forms part of an interesting element of the design that Andover developed in order to accommodate the Euro VI truck’s exhaust, which runs above the chassis over the second axle. Andover added a raised section accessible via a small slope behind the headboard, this in turn allowed the winch to be placed much lower to the floor as well as providing a location for recessed chain trays.

The two 32-tonne rigid trucks mark a step up in size for CRH, having previously operated 26-tonne rigids from a range of chassis manufacturers. “We opted for 32-tonne plant bodies out of necessity, mainly due to the fact that new emission regulations mean the self-propelled rollers we supply are getting heavier. Though we are phasing out some of our older trucks, the Andover bodies are holding up so well most are still part of the fleet,” says Thomas.

All Andover Trailers plant bodies are precision built to suit each individual truck chassis. The company’s reputation for sturdiness ensures that CRH Plant’s two new deliveries will be up to the task of their expected five days per week workload over the next 10 years, clocking up in the region of 700,000km in that time.

CRH Plant has also placed an order for a pair of the latest generation of tri-axle semi-sloping step frame trailers, which are ideal for moving road surfacing equipment, especially rollers. They will be built to a similar specification to the plant bodies, featuring fold-forward ramps, Andover’s working at height system and chapter eight marking on the rear. Delivery is expected early 2017.

NEW PLANT BODY TO TACKLE DELIVERIES IN THE COTSWOLDS

Gloucester-based Ermin Plant Hire has taken delivery of a new 13-tonne Mercedes-Benz Atego mounted with an Andover Trailers plant body and double-cranked beavertail. The firm also has a larger 26-tonne Arocs with plant body in build for delivery later this year.

The Atego replaces a similar truck, which also featured Andover Trailers bodywork, and will operate primarily from the company’s Cirencester depot carrying general plant including diggers, dumpers and rollers. It has been specified with a shorter wheelbase to allow for easier access to construction sites in the Cotswolds, which must often be accessed via narrow lanes.

Mark Davis, Ermin Plant Hire Transport Manager says: “Having worked with Andover Trailers across three decades, we have always found their plant bodies to perform exceptionally well and live up to the rigorous demands of transporting heavy equipment.

“When it came to ordering our new plant body, Andover Trailers was naturally our first choice.”

Constructed with combined mesh and hardwood ramps, to allow for the loading of machinery on tyres or tracks, as well as steel drum rollers, the plant body features a fixed-width working at height safety system complete with straps and stowage for the posts set against the headboard. Additional features include ramp controls situated on both sides for maximum ease of operation, a radio remote-controlled electric winch and open-top chain trays to safely store chains when not in use.

The 26-tonner on order will be built to the same specification as an identical vehicle delivered last year. The 6×2 rear-steer Arocs will be mounted with a plant body featuring a double-crank beavertail and fuel-saving fold-forward ramps, hydraulic steady legs and eight pairs of lashing rings – with four further rings fitted in the centre of the deck – as well as a removable, fixed-width working at height system and ramp controls on each side of the vehicle.

It will be used to deliver larger items of plant, which range from eight-tonne excavators to telehandlers, forklifts, boom lifts, cherry pickers and dump trucks.

Davis adds: “Andover Trailers has always provided us with purpose-built products specific to our needs and this new 26-tonne plant body will be no different.”

ANDOVER TRAILERS CARRIES WEIGHT WITH OSMONDS

Kent-based Osmonds Transport & Planing has taken delivery of two new step frame trailers with beavertails from Andover Trailers – continuing a working relationship between the two companies which has lasted almost three decades.

The new 56 and 73 tonne step frames join four Andover Trailers’ products currently in operation with the road planing and plant-moving specialist, which ordered its first trailer from Andover in 1988.

Both trailers stand out for featuring a new generation of box-section slide-out side extension which is stronger, simpler to use, easier to clean and which is now galvanised to ensure a long life in service. Also new to the design is the installation of 10 tonne rated RUD swing-up lashing loops and M36 load securing points built into the load bed to accommodate 14 or 16 tonne screw-in RUD lashings, for easier load securing.

Tom Osmond, Managing Director of Osmonds Transport & Planing, says: “You cannot beat the Andover Trailers build quality. Everything they produce is designed and manufactured to an incredibly high specification – quite frankly, we regard them as the strongest trailers on the market.

“What’s more, you always receive that personal touch with Andover – it’s one of the reasons we keep coming back year after year.”

Both trailers have been built with 1m wide power toe ramps with sliding width adjustment and knife edge toes, to accommodate a wide range of cargoes. This includes an extensive fleet of Wirtgen cold-milling machines operated by the company, which range in size from 15 to 36 tonnes, plus any heavy plant being carried by the transport division.

The SFCL56 and SFCL73 step frames are equipped with three and four SAF axles respectively, with a rear-steering capability. Disc brakes, Andover’s own safety-light system and robust 285/70 R 19.5 tyres – the largest fitted to any step frame in the Andover Trailers range – add to the impressive specification.

Finished in ‘midnight blue’ paintwork, they have also been pre-fitted for a working at height safety system on the neck, to allow for easy retrofitting at a later stage.

Both trailers will cover more than 50,000 miles annually and are in operation across the South of England up to seven days a week.

Established in 1975 and operating from Brenchley, Kent, Osmonds Transport & Planing runs an extensive fleet of road planing machines, tippers, road sweepers, step frames and low loaders. The company is also a member of the Association of Planing Contractors.

ANDOVER TRAILERS’ SLOPED DECK PUTS NEW SLANT ON PLANT FOR ROSS GARRETT TRANSPORT

Somerset-based heavy haul specialist Ross Garrett Transport has expanded its fleet with a new tri-axle sloped deck step frame trailer from Andover Trailers, with the company director affirming that “we wouldn’t really want to buy new trailers from anyone else”.

The new trailer, which will primarily move heavy plant weighing up to 36 tonnes around the South-West, joins a fleet of four low-loaders and three flatbeds at the company, one of which is an Andover Trailers-built unit purchased in 1995 – which is still going strong 20 years later.

Luke Garrett, Director, says: “We still run the 1995 trailer every day – it’s testament to the high build-quality of Andover Trailers’ work, and one of my personal favourites to hitch up to. We were so impressed by that trailer’s robust design and durability that we invested in additional Andover Trailers in 2005 and 2009.

“We value our Andover Trailers for their strength, low weight and ease of operation – even on some of the rough roads we have to traverse when we’re loading and unloading heavy plant at quarries and other off-road sites. Plus, the company’s aftersales support is second to none – they’re always on call.”

Ross Garrett Transport’s bespoke new trailer was built at the manufacturer’s Andover, Hampshire facility to the company’s precise business requirements, using only the highest quality materials and components.

The trailer features BPW drum brake axles with rear lifting capability, Andover Trailers’ innovative 1m-wide power toe hydraulic fold-forward ramps – specially shaped for access equipment – strobes, safety lights and LED lighting for safer working at night.

The trailer’s bed was designed to accommodate six extra pairs of lashing points, enabling multiple configurations of plant to be secured safely. Also incorporated are toolboxes and a chain tray built into the bed for easy and safe storage.

“I asked for a longer neck on this trailer,” adds Garrett. “It’s been shaped so it doesn’t stick out so far when you’re turning into a corner. Being able to request specific changes is one of the things I love most about buying from Andover Trailers.”

The gentle slope of the trailer’s bed allows loading of machines that might struggle with a normal step frame trailer, such as road rollers and access platforms. The company expects the trailer to cover more than 80,000 miles annually, working up to seven days a week.

When he’s not transporting heavy plant around the UK, Luke Garrett regularly takes to the circuit as part of the Ross Garrett Transport truck racing team in an ERF 4×2 – complete with Andover Trailers sponsorship atop its green and white livery.

ANDOVER TRAILERS STANDS OUT WITH SHAUN BURTON TRANSPORT

Somerset-based construction equipment specialist Shaun Burton Transport has taken delivery of its fourth tri-axle semi-sloping step frame from Andover Trailers, for transporting rollers, pavers and other items of heavy plant.

Shaun Burton Transport, which maintains a fleet of 12 trucks and six heavy plant trailers, has been purchasing bespoke-built trailers from Andover since 2012. The firm has a further two trailers on order to join the fleet for delivery in 2015.

The new SFSL 40 trailer is equipped with a low profile neck and a semi-sloping frame which allows Shaun Burton Transport to make full use of the trailer’s length, with the ability to load plant safely and easily onto the upper deck.

SAF air suspension, with a Wabco raise/lower valve, has been included to ensure the drivers can raise the running height when making deliveries off-road, or lower the suspension to ensure the most gradual loading angles.

Shaun Burton, Managing Director at Shaun Burton Transport, says: “The sheer demands of operating in the construction environment means that we put build quality at the top of our shopping list when specifying new trailers. The step frames we’ve purchased from Andover have given excellent performance since the first one was delivered three years ago.

“With this latest delivery Andover has provided us with a trailer which can not only be depended on, but is also lighter than competitor models. This allows us to move more equipment with every trip, making our fleet more productive.”

The trailer will be used to deliver equipment to sites across the UK.

The specification includes a full LED lighting system and silver conspicuity markings down both sides, for maximum visibility. It also features SAF drum brake axles, with a lifting rear and auto-lowering facility, plus 1m wide power toe ramps with access toes.

The trailer will operate with a striking Scania R620 tractor unit which features a prominent custom-painted livery; it is expected to remain in service for at least eight years.
